What is the RDS?

The Research Design Service for the East of England (RDS EoE) is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). We are an active and dynamic network and offer free research advice and support across the region.

Thinking of applying for research funding?

If so the RDS EoE can advise on all aspects of preparing grant applications and building collaborative research teams, we can help turn innovative research ideas into strong research proposals to attract funding. If you have any questions or indeed a research proposal that you would like to discuss, please contact us.

What can the RDS do for you?

Much of our work is done through one to one meetings with individual researchers but we also encourage clients to attend our workshops. If you are aiming to submit a bid to NIHR or the Department of Health this year you may wish to note the dates below in your diaries. We have a planned programme of regional support which hopefully will help with planning the milestones to be accomplished before you submit and will enable you be in a position to take advantage of feedback we offer.

1. NIHR two-day workshops
These are designed for novice bidders who have not applied to NIHR before. The workshops provide an outline of the particular characteristics and remits of NIHR bids, and an overview of what is involved in bidding. There will be one held in October. There are 20 places per workshop, total cost £50 for the two days. Please enquire directly to Dr Muhammad Waqar; muhammad.waqar@beds.ac.uk or on 01582 743782.

2. Bid development one-day workshop
These are for bids at the first or second draft stage and nearing completion. Advisers will be available for the participating research teams to consult on different aspects of their bid. Proposals should be sent to your RDS key Adviser in advance of the workshops and priority will be given to those bids nearest to completion. There are 5 places only per workshop. Please contact us for more information, Next available dates for 2013: 28 June in Takeley, near Stansted Airport.

3. Pre-Submission Panel
This is like a ‘dry run’ of submitting to NIHR. Feedback will consist of the panel’s view of any fixable and non-fixable faults of the proposal and readiness for submission. The proposers are not required to attend, but should send their completed bids to their RDS key advisor by the date below. The panel comprises of all advisors and methodological specialists in the region in the same way that bids are considered by NIHR committees. Any bid received will be considered that is complete and aiming for submission within a few weeks.
Planned dates for 2013: 16
May, 11 September.

Submit bids for inclusion to
Dr Muhammad Waqar as above.

Multiple Sclerosis Society

Innovative award: The essential purpose of an innovative award is to provide support for a short-term, small-scale pilot or proof of concept research project. It is hoped that these awards will encourage established researchers from both within and outside the MS field to explore ideas in MS research that, if merited, may lead to further support through the Society or other funding sources.

Project grant: The essential purpose of a project grant is to provide support for a time-limited research project designed to answer a single question or a small group of related questions. Project grants provide support for a maximum of three years.

PhD studentship: PhD studentships are designed to encourage the best graduates to embark on a research career in MS. These awards provide practical research training leading to a doctorate, through a time-limited research project related to MS, under the direct supervision of a senior and experienced researcher. Application should be made by the prospective supervisor, who
should be associated with an established multidisciplinary research group in a UK university department or similar research environment in the UK.
